Kelliher Statement on Nurses Strike

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The Minnesota Nurses Association announced today more than 12,000 Twin Cities nurses will conduct a one-day strike for patient safety. Margaret Anderson Kelliher, DFL- and Minnesota Nurses Association-endorsed candidate for Governor, had this to say about today’s announcement.

“I am proud to be standing with Minnesota nurses today as they stand up for the safety and well-being of their patients.  I am standing up with nurses who stand at our bedsides, and care for Minnesotans in our times of greatest need; nurses who care for the sick, the elderly, and the injured.

“It’s time to put patient safety before profits. That’s why I am urging the hospitals to work with Minnesota nurses to address their concerns regarding patient safety.

“It is important for us to have financially stable and fully-staffed hospitals. Minnesota has the opportunity right now to bring back $1.4 billion to Minnesota that will help stabilize our hospitals. That means 22,000 direct health care jobs in Minnesota, and it means hospitals are not forced to make choices between the bottom line and patient safety."

“I come from a working family, and I have always stood with working Minnesotans. I think it’s important that workers have a decent wage and safe working conditions in this state. Working Minnesotans, and working nurses, will always have my support.”
