For eight long years, Minnesota has had a Governor focused on his presidential ambitions rather than our students, seniors, and working families. Republicans like Tim Pawlenty and Tom Emmer have forced property taxes through the roof and left our state with a gaping budget deficit.
As Speaker of the House I led the fight against Tim Pawlenty and Tom Emmer. Under my leadership, we increased education funding $1.6 billion, covered 37,000 uninsured kids, expanded health care for 20,000 working adults, and protected basic coverage for 85,000 of Minnesota’s poorest, sickest people.
As our roads and bridges deteriorated under the neglect of Tim Pawlenty and Carol Molnau, I brought together Democrats and Republicans to override Tim Pawlenty’s transportation veto. That single effort invested more than $6 billion in roads and bridges and established the state’s first dedicated funding source for transit. It was the largest single job creator in a generation.
I built the coalition to pass the nation’s strongest Renewable Energy Standard. After more than a decade of work I successfully led the fight to pass the Legacy Amendment – giving Minnesotans the choice to invest in our environment, clean water, parks and trails, and arts and culture.
As your next Governor, I will focus on creating good jobs, great schools, and ensuring we have safe roads and bridges. Because being Governor isn’t about scoring political points – it’s about improving people’s lives and getting Minnesota back to work.
