Stories from the Road: Kelliher Voices Support for Proactive Flood Mitigation Efforts
MOORHEAD, MN – DFL-endorsed
candidate for Governor Margaret Anderson Kelliher stood on the banks of the Red
River today in Moorhead, voicing her strong support for flood protection
efforts in Moorhead and surrounding communities. Kelliher was joined by state
Sen. Keith Langseth and state Rep. Paul Marquart.
“Minnesota families and businesses need a proactive leader who sees problems before they happen and has the foresight to do something about it,” said Kelliher.
“Families and business owners all along the banks of the Red River know one thing: the river will flood again. That’s why we have to do everything possible now to protect homes and businesses. It’s why as Governor, I will partner with Moorhead and communities downstream to implement the North Dakota diversion plan as recommended by the Metro Flood Study.”
The Red River has exceeded flood stage in 50 of the last 106 years, including every year from 1993 to 2009. Average annual flood damages to homes, businesses, and infrastructure exceed $65 million. Kelliher says that is too much for hard-working families and businesses to sacrifice every time the river spills its banks.
“It’s time to once and for all do what is necessary to protect our communities from devastating floods,” said Kelliher. “The North Dakota diversion plan would protect communities from even the worst flooding events and deliver the highest possible return on investment. It is the only plan that won’t limit further economic development in Moorhead, Dilworth, and other Minnesota communities along the river.”
As Governor, Kelliher says she will make certain the state comes through with the local match to finally complete the project, and protect families and businesses.
“One of state government’s most fundamental responsibilities is protecting the people and communities it serves,” said Kelliher. “Coming through on this important flood mitigation effort is not only the responsible thing to do, it’s the right thing to do for the people of Minnesota.”
