DFL-endorsed Kelliher Would Boost Minimum Wage $1.50
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – DFL-endorsed candidate for Governor Margaret Anderson Kelliher announced today that she would increase the minimum wage by $1.50 – continuing an effort she began with Rep. Tom Rukavina and Archbishop Harry Flynn in 2008.
Currently Minnesota has the 44th lowest minimum wage rate in the nation. Kelliher’s proposal would change that because she says, Minnesota must and can do better.
“My opponent Tom Emmer thinks hard-working Minnesotans serving tables are earning six-figure salaries,” Kelliher said. Emmer proposed a tip penalty this week that could bring base wages for servers in Minnesota to as low as $2.13.
“Clearly Tom Emmer is out of touch with the challenges facing hard-working families struggling in this economy. What he has proposed is no different than stealing tips off the tables of working people.”
Kelliher to Screen First TV Ad for Volunteers Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – DFL-endorsed
candidate for Governor Margaret Anderson Kelliher’s first television ad will
hit the airwaves Tuesday, July 13. MAKtion! volunteers at locations around the
state will see the ad first. MAKtion! volunteers are reaching out to 60,000
primary voters this weekend on the phones and at the doors – bringing Kelliher’s
message of good jobs and great schools to every corner of the state.
In a letter to thousands of volunteers today, Kelliher wrote: “Our first TV ad will hit the airwaves on Tuesday. Your support made that possible. Because of all the hard work you have done on the phones and knocking on doors, I want you to see the ad first.”
Minnesota Needs A Jobs Budget
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – DFL-endorsed candidate for Governor Margaret Anderson Kelliher had this to say about the projected $5.8 billion budget shortfall.
“After balancing the budget four times, I know this is more than a math problem. Our budget is about setting priorities based on Minnesota values: good jobs, great schools and safe communities.
“What my opponents don’t understand is that Minnesota’s number one budget problem is our lack of jobs. That’s why I am fighting to get Minnesota back to work.
“With 208,000 Minnesotans out of work, and thousands more working harder and earning less, the challenges facing our state are serious. These challenges require honest, stable leadership. Minnesotans need solutions, not slogans.
“Mark Dayton’s plan to raise taxes on middle class families and senior citizens, and Tom Emmer’s plan to slash schools, health care, and police and fire services are unrealistic and irresponsible.
Stories From the Road: DFL-endorsed Kelliher Talks Jobs in Winona
WINONA,
MN – DFL-endorsed candidate for Governor Margaret Anderson Kelliher continued
her No Stone Unturned jobs tour
today, visiting Southeast Technical College in Winona. Kelliher met with instructors
and discussed the college’s new two-year nanosciences certificate
program – a program that is training students for the next generation of
good-paying Minnesota jobs.
“As Governor, I will do everything it takes to get Minnesota back to work. No idea is too big or too small – whether it creates 50 jobs or 500,” said Kelliher. “Programs like this one at Southeast Technical College are laying the groundwork for needed job growth in Minnesota.”
The National Science Foundation, which helped fund the new nanosciences program, predicts a demand for 2 million nanotechnology workers worldwide over the next 15 years. Kelliher says it will take bold leadership and programs like this one at Southeast Technical College can help bring some of those good-paying jobs to Minnesota.
A Campaign in MAKtion!
MINNEAPOLIS, MN –

airing her first television ad within days. As the campaign gears up to hit the
airwaves, thousands of volunteers are bringing Margaret’s message of good jobs
and great schools to primary voters on the phones and at the doors every week.
Thirty days out from Election Day, the Kelliher campaign is recruiting thousands of volunteers to contact more than 60,000 voters in a weekend of action – a three-day direct voter contact extravaganza the campaign is calling MAKtion!
“We will win this campaign door-by-door, voter-by-voter,” said Kelliher, the DFL-endorsed candidate for Governor. “Our campaign’s strong grassroots network is reaching voters one-by-one in a ground effort our opponents can’t compete with. That’s how you win a primary election in Minnesota.”
Kelliher Statement on Nurses Contract
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – DFL-endorsed candidate for Governor Margaret Anderson Kelliher had this to say about an agreement ratified between Minnesota nurses and Twin Cities hospitals.
“I am pleased 12,000 hard-working Minnesota nurses and 14 Twin Cities hospitals have successfully ratified a new contract.
“Minnesota nurses stand up for their patients every day, and I was proud to stand with them as they fought for safer working conditions. Our nurses’ courage and commitment to their patients will improve care in Twin Cities hospitals, and Minnesota is better because of it.
“Tim Pawlenty’s refusal to collect $1.4 billion in federal aid is costing Minnesota taxpayers $1 million every day.
“As Governor the first thing I will do is sign the executive order to bring those dollars home – funding that will stabilize our hospitals and create 30,000 health care jobs over the next 4 years.”
Stories From the Road: DFL-endorsed Kelliher Talks K-12 Education in Mankato
MANKATO, MN – DFL-endorsed candidate for Governor Margaret Anderson Kelliher met with parents and teachers today in Mankato to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing Minnesota students. Kelliher is a working mom with two kids in public schools.
“A strong education is the foundation of a strong economy,” said Kelliher. “Minnesota’s educated workforce has always been our state’s best competitive advantage.”
But Kelliher warns that without bold leadership, Minnesota’s nation-leading schools could slip into mediocrity.
“As a mom I know the challenges Minnesota students are facing,” said Kelliher. “Our schools face limited resources and growing class sizes. Minnesota’s achievement gap is the second-worst in the nation, and only half of our students come to Kindergarten ready to learn. In Minnesota we must and can do better.
Kelliher Statement on Tom Emmer's Proposed Tip Penalty
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Tom Emmer disclosed today that he would enact a tip penalty for restaurant workers. DFL-endorsed candidate for Governor Margaret Anderson Kelliher worked with Archbishop Harry Flynn and others to pass legislation in 2008 to increase the minimum wage by $1.50. Tim Pawlenty vetoed the bill. Kelliher had this to say about Emmer’s statements today.
“More than 208,000 Minnesotans are out of work. Thousands more are working harder and earning less.
“My opponent Tom Emmer announced today that if elected Governor he would enact a tip penalty for restaurant workers – allowing employers to cut wages even deeper for hard-working Minnesotans.
“That’s wrong.
“As a working mom, I know how hard it is to balance the checkbook at the end of the month. And in this economy, every dollar matters.
Kelliher outspent but not outrun: Statewide network of volunteers woos voters one by one

Can a ground game beat an air game?
Margaret Anderson Kelliher and the DFL establishment are betting her ground game — an army of volunteers phoning or talking directly to tens of thousands of voters — can overcome the television-advertising air games of her millionaire rivals, Mark Dayton and Matt Entenza, in the Aug. 10 primary for governor.
Kelliher, the Minnesota House speaker and DFL-endorsed gubernatorial candidate, acknowledges Dayton and Entenza can afford to buy more airtime than her campaign can. But she will start airing TV spots this month.
More important, she says: She's got volunteers. Her team is "working nonstop to build a statewide organization" of volunteers.
"We are running a people-powered campaign," she said.
Her strategy flies in the face of conventional political wisdom: the candidate with the higher name recognition — often bought with TV ads — wins.
Not always, said Jeff Blodgett, who managed the late U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone's successful grassroots campaigns.
